Dear Baby Girl
As you will soon learn the day you are born – daddy ain’t perfect. I will wait for your arrival in the corridors of the hospital [
watching Netflix ],a plastic bag full of bananas for you mama in hand because well , that’s what I saw other men do . Talking about your mama, I don’t even know if I have met her yet. You see daddy has no idea about a lot of things, about why the sky is blue or why men have nipples, about how to raise you but without question nor doubt you are the best thing that will ever happened to me .
And if you grow to become the kind of woman, men crave to look at – let them look. But do not for a second think of yourself as an oasis to their thirstness . Just because they desire to have you, it doesn’t mean they respect you and gifts from a man are not some sort of downpayment to caress your figure. No, your body will not accept any form of lay by facilities nor will it be the training ground for teenagers.
To the daughter I am yet to have ; As you soon will learn – daddy loves hard, so I will not raise you to carry the same scares as mine, I will not christen you in my own fears and anxieties like my grandfather did to his own daughters.I will do my best to give you the life I never had and I will reserve the best parts of me for you.
The world will introduce you to the word achievements, I want you to create your own definition of that word. The world will also put in your vocabulary the word sexy, – let it mean whatever you want it to mean but do not for a second put those two words in the same sentence and think the ability to arose a man ( or woman ) sexually is an achievement. You are called for more than make-up, Brazilian weaves or six inch heels so do not along the line let someone change your perspective nor shift your view.
To the daughter I am yet to have ; You are the most beautiful thing between the dirt of this earth and the sky . Your value is not up for discussion nor is it negotiable. After all, just like the United States government – we do not negotiate with terrorists. I will teach you of how the seed never gets to see the flower, of how to choose self love over recognition, of how your words are more powerful than you small mind might realize. I will teach you to unlearn the lessons society will implant in you, the lectures culture will nurture into you.
I will teach you to celebrate and love yourself first before anyone else, for how can you give what you do not have. Ooh and if you decide not to get married, am good with that too. See inspite of what the world will teach you, in our house – marriage is not an achievement . Dear baby girl, I will keep the best lessons of life only for you and I will write and read you these letters religiously – like a bedtime story.
TO BE CONTINUED….
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
